The First COMPFEST Advanced Seminar
Posted on September 24, 2019

Last Saturday on 21st September 2019, COMPFEST held its first-ever Advanced Seminar at Balai Sidang, Universitas Indonesia. Registrants from various universities, institutions, and also far away cities, came streaming in the morning, enthusiastic about the seminar up ahead.

This Advanced Seminar is composed of three subtopics featuring three speakers and was moderated by Octabiano Pertama, S.Kom, Co-Founder and Scientist at BISA.AI.

The first subtopic is “Big Data to Support Digital Transformation” which was commandeered by Benny Riadi, Head of Solution & Data Architect at OVO. Mr. Riardi told the audience about how data is everything. Getting to know your customers in detail, like their behaviors, purchasing habits, and interests, is what made OVO sky-rocket in just two years. He expressed that doing a combination of streaming and batch data ingestion is a savvy way to get raw and effective data to help you figure out what customers really want. Not only that, but Mr.Riardi also gave the audience a sneak-peek into OVO’s data model architecture and Big Data API architecture!

Next, Dr. Dewi Yanti Liliana, S.Kom., M.Kom, a Machine Learning Researcher and Alumni Doctoral Fasilkom UI, took center stage to shed light on “How Emotion-recognition Technology Will Change Human Life”.  Dr. Dewi told the audience about Social Intelligence which is a branch of Artificial Intelligence that uses Social Signal Processing (SSP). SSP catches signals from sensors that recognize human expressions. Dr.Dewi expressed that SSP is important because it represents the morality and emotionality of humans. Other AI branches are only limited to cognitive advancement. In a sit-down interview with Dr. Dewi, she stated that the implementation of social intelligence in Indonesia hasn’t kicked off yet. “It’s still a new branch of research. It’s still at an initial state,” said Dr.Dewi. She hopes that the SSP research she and her team are conducting can help bring awareness about Social Intelligence and encourage university students and other researchers to utilize it for the good of our country. Marketing, entertainment, and education are some of the examples of the sectors that can be benefited by Social Intelligence.

Last but certainly not least, the subtopic “Big Data & AI In Enabling Instant Underwriting and Claim Processing In the Insurance Industry” was lead by Iskak Hendrawan, Chief Information & Technology Officer at Prudential Indonesia. Mr. Hendrawan told the audience about how Big Data can define and create instant user experience (UX). He gave the audience some tips to overcome data fraud by using machine learning and implement decision trees. He agreed with what Mr. Riadi said about data being everything because, with more data you have, the fewer prices and costs will be.

After each speaker had a turn presenting their topic, our moderator opened a questions-and-answers session where questions varied from the threats of social intelligence to how to convert data stored in a relational model to NoSQL. Next, the participants of the Advanced Seminar were ushered out of the auditorium to eat lunch and have a networking session with fellow speakers. During the networking session, the participants can ask more in-depth questions about the topics of the seminar and even ask about tips about the projects their working on.

The participants left Balai Sidang that day with more knowledge about Big Data and Artificial Intelligence that they hope to use in the future. That concludes the end of COMPFEST’s Advanced Seminar.
