Posted on September 11, 2019

Hello, Igniters!

Last weekend, on the 7thand 8thof September 2019, Indie Camp and Indie Game Ignite final was held at Fasilkom UI and STMIK Nusa Mandiri Margonda.

Day One (Saturday, September 7, 2019)

On Saturday morning, the Indie Camp event began with a seminar by Ken Lai at STMIK Nusa Mandiri Margonda. The seminar began at exactly 10:20 a.m.

Ken Lai is the CEO of Brandoville by Lemon Sky and co-owner of Lemon Sky Studios. Brandoville by Lemon Sky was founded in 2018 and is the first independent studio in Indonesia to produce high-quality projects, AAA games, and famous episodic TV animation series around the world.

Ken Lai’s seminar was about his ups and downs from being an ordinary college student in Canada to being the CEO and co-owner as he is today. He was born in Hong Kong and then moved to Canada with his family. He studied at Vancouver Film School and the University of Toronto. After graduating, he continued his career at EA Canada, where he developed games for more than 7 years as the Lead and Technical Artist, producing a variety of well-known games such as Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Since then, he has more than 15 years of executive management experience in the animation and gaming industry. By using his endless experience and determination, he continues to propel his passion for art while encouraging individuals around him to achieve beyond the status quo.

After the seminar and the question and answer session, the finalists were mobilized to rest, pray, and eat at Fasilkom UI. After that, at exactly 1 pm, they had a mentoring session with the mentors until 4:30 pm. Lastly, they were briefed for the upcoming final presentation scheduled the next day.

Day Two (Sunday, September 8, 2019)

There were 13 teams that made it to the final stage; one team consisted of 1 to 3 people. The second day began with the registration of the finalists at 9 am.

On the second and also the final day, the finalists had to present their games to the judges. The judges include Ar Cahyadi Indra (Game Programmer at Agate), Rudy Rachman Indrawanto (Game Director at Vifth Floor), Mega Denditya Mardiyanto (CEO of Chocoarts), and Charles Juliandhika (Art Production Manager at Brandoville).

During lunch, our team was given the opportunity to interview one of the finalists, Adam. Adam is still in high school. He studies in SMAN 1 Depok. He knew COMPFEST from a gamer group on Facebook. The reason Adam entered the Indie Game Ignite competition was that he was interested in games and creating games, and was also eyeing for the prize money. He gained a lot of knowledge while participating in Indie Game Ignite at COMPFEST.

Our team was also given the chance to interview Charles Juliandhika, an Art Production Manager at Brandoville. This was his first time being a judge. He felt honored to be a judge in Indie Game Ignite. He encouraged COMPFEST to continue holding competitions like Indie Game Ignite every year.

After the second session, the finalists were mobilized to Balai Sidang, Universitas Indonesia for the Awarding Night event, where the winners of all competitions in COMPFEST were announced.
