Iris Scanner : The Latest Security System Innovation
Posted on August 7, 2019

Following problems that arise about security systems, the iris scanner comes as one of the latest innovations that improve data security protection for its users. The iris scanner was developed by utilizing the principle of biometrics, which is a computerized method that uses biological aspects, especially the unique characteristics possessed by humans. Biometric principles use biometric data to identify individuals based on the measurement of their physiological characteristics. Physiological characteristics can control and protect sensitive data contained in information systems. Likewise, with fingerprint scanning, voice recognition, palm analysis, iris scanner also utilizes these principles.

The iris scanner began to be known by the public after Samsung released the Galaxy Note 7 with an iris scanner. The addition of the iris scanner feature is able to improve the security of mobile phones and user’s data. Using the iris scanner on a smartphone is quite easy. Cellphone users must first register their iris pattern to be saved on the cellphone. To unlock the phone, users only need to place their eyes toward the front camera that is equipped with infrared LEDs which will scan the eyes of their owners. This infrared LED is useful for scanning in places that lack light. After the image is recorded, intelligent software translates the iris pattern into code. This code will be compared to the record to find a match.

The iris scanner has several advantages compared to other security systems. It has the highest level of accuracy so far because it utilizes eye patterns that have their uniqueness for each iris. The uniqueness between each iris will make it difficult to falsified. The iris scanner allows more than 200 points to experiment, in contrast to 60-70 points only in fingerprints. In one experiment, the iris scanner never had an iris scanning error in 2 million eye patterns. The iris of the human eye is stable, it will not change the iris even though aged, except when the eye has cataracts. The iris scanner is also fast in verifying data in 1-2 seconds.

In addition to these advantages, the iris scanner also has several shortcomings. In bright sunlight, the iris scanner is difficult to work with. This is because infrared LEDs are blocked by bright sunlight. So if you want to keep using it, the user must move to a more shady place so that the iris can be read. Another weakness is that it does not support the 360 positions, in contrast to the fingerprint that already supports this. When the smartphone’s position is reversed, the iris cannot be recognized so the smartphone must be in the correct position to scan.

The iris scanner is not only used in security protection for smartphones but is also used in several various scenarios. One example is that the UK bank, TSB, introduced the iris scanner facility for customers who have mobile phones with the iris scanner facility. Another example is that developed countries use it at the border to identify its citizens which speeds up the queue process for travelers.
