Data Science Academy : Camp 2
Posted on July 30, 2019

Last weekend, on July 27 and 28, the second camp of Data Science Academy was held at GO-JEK HQ, over at Pasaraya Blok M. Like the name implies, the participants learned a lot about data science from a handful of our renowned guests.

On the first day, Mr. Bernardus Ari Kuncoro, the Head of Analytics COE of IYKRA, tutored our participants. He gave the students (who were separated into teams) objectives and encouraged them to present the conclusions of their discussions.

After he was done teaching, we got the chance to interview him. According to him, data science in Indonesia, in general, leaves a lot of room for improvement. In fact, as of right now, there are no specific laws regarding data science in Indonesia. Events such as COMPFEST helps data science development by attracting attention, and by extension raising the possibility for improvements in the field. For our young participants who are interested in the data science field, Mr. Bernardus emphasized 3 skills which, according to him, were very important in the field of data science. Those skills are programming, business, and communication/ social skills. (Learn more in our interview video)

After that, there was a talk show.

On the second day, the event was filled with the participating teams presenting their work. They were scored by 3 judges (among them Mr. Bernardus). The judges gave each of the teams’ inputs and critics after they presented. After a long discussion, the judges announced the 3 teams they thought were the best.

After the announcement, we had the chance to interview one of the judges, Dr. Irvan Bastian Arief, Head of Research Scientist at Tokopedia. According to him, COMPFEST is a really good event for spreading the world of Data Science. He thinks that data is the future, and data science development opens up so many new possibilities for technological advancements. He encourages those who are interested in data science to pursue the field with high spirits, and gave tips on how to improve the skills necessary to do so. He also adds that he was really delighted to participate in the Data Science Academy, and gave a message to all of its participants to keep on practicing.

And with that, Data Science Academy Camp 2 was completed, and by extension Data Science Academy as a whole. We hope the students got what they were looking for and more, and the teachers, a memorable experience.
